Shape sorting might look like simple play, but it’s actually working lots of important skills behind the scenes. Today, one of our little ones worked so hard at matching, trying again, and celebrating every success!

Here’s what shape sorting helps build:
👀 Eye-hand coordination
🧠 Problem-solving and attention
✋ Grasp and release
🤝 Frustration tolerance and perseverance

We love how this activity gives kids the chance to explore, make choices, and feel proud when that shape finally fits just right!

🌞✨ Summer Sensory Scavenger Hunt ✨🌞

Turn learning into a summer-themed sensory adventure! Kids will explore, touch, and find letters and numbers hidden in sand or a sensory bin.

Skills Addressed:
✅ Letter recognition
✅ Tactile exploration and sensory processing
✅ Fine motor skills (grasping, scooping)
✅ Early language development

Materials Needed:

Large shallow bin or plastic container

Plastic or foam letters (uppercase or lowercase)

Small scoops, shovels, or cups

A beach bucket or container to collect found letters and numbers

How to Play:

Bury letters and numbers in the sand.

Have your toddler dig them out one by one.

Sort them into two buckets: Letters and Numbers.

Count the numbers together or sing the ABC song as you line them up.

Practice Tracing: Once a letter is found, encourage the child to trace it with their finger or copy it in the sand.

Sort: Place found letters in a “treasure bucket” or line them up in ABC order (or just as they’re found).

Tips: For toddlers who are sensitive to sand, try using dry pasta or shredded paper instead. Focus on a few target letters, like the letters in their name.

Looking for a simple, meaningful activity to do with your child? Try a Park Scavenger Hunt, created by an occupational therapist to support development while having fun outdoors.

✅ How it works:
Together, look for treasures like:

🪵 A wooden stick
🌸 A flower

🪨 A smooth rock
🚲 A bike

💡 Parent Tip:
Encourage your child to describe what they see, hear, and feel. Talking about colors, textures, and sounds strengthens language, attention, and connection.
